Pedestrian Accidents on the Rise in Florida

Posted By Todd Miner Law || 23-Mar-2016

Pedestrian accidents are on the rise nationwide, but a new study has concluded that Florida is among the worst in the country for preventable pedestrian accidents for the first half of 2015. In the first six months of the year, nearly 2,400 pedestrians were killed in traffic accidents, reflecting a six percent increase over the previous year. Even as total traffic deaths have been on a downward trend over the past decade, pedestrian deaths have been steadily rising each year since 2005.

The report found that there are a number of factors responsible for these alarming statistics. Distraction is a major contributor (among both drivers and pedestrians alike), along with other factors like shorter winters, warmer weather, lower gas prices, and more drivers on the road. More public interest in health is also the reason behind a greater number of pedestrians who choose to walk instead of drive.

Florida counties with the highest numbers of pedestrian accidents and fatalities (501 and higher) include:

  • Escambia
  • Duval
  • Volusia
  • Orange
  • Brevard
  • Pasco
  • Polk
  • Hillsborough
  • Pinellas
  • Manatee
  • Sarasota
  • Lee
  • Palm Beach
  • Broward
  • Miami-Dade

Pedestrian Safety Tips

If you enjoy walking to your destination, consider these helpful pedestrian safety tips:

  1. Never assume vehicles will stop for you. Always be on the defensive!
  2. Watch for vehicles turning in front of you, especially near driveways.
  3. Make sure to look both ways – twice!
  4. Avoid wearing headphones or using your cell phone.
  5. Always walk on the sidewalk. If one isn’t available, walk facing road traffic.
  6. Don’t completely rely on pedestrian signals. Always double check to make sure it is safe before proceeding.
