A 26-year-old Orlando woman died Monday after losing control of her car, crossing the median and plunging into a retention pond. Three passers-by immediately jumped into the water to save her but couldn’t pull her out because her seat belt was buckled, authorities say. Rescue crews arrived shortly after the accident, pulling her from the wreckage about 26 minutes later. Police say she died several hours later at the hospital from injuries suffered in the accident.
Police don’t know what caused her to lose control of the vehicle. Authorities say the vehicle was about 20 feet away from the shoreline, submerged in about 10 feet of water. This is the second Central Florida highway accident in two weeks that involved water, authorities say.
