State Legislator Seeks to Ban Texting While Driving

It is common sense that activities like texting or talking on the phone can be dangerous while driving, but Florida State Sen. Carey Baker has proposed legislation seeking to make these activities a crime under state law.  In fact, Baker has proposed two similar laws designed to make drivers focus on the road.  One of the laws bans texting by all drivers, while the other also bans talking on the phone by minors.

Several other states including Washington and Minnesota have already passed bans on texting, as have a number of cities across the country.  Studies have shown that texting, in particular, leads to a higher risk of accidents, causing drivers to drift in and out of traffic lanes.

Under Baker’s proposal, texting while driving would result in a traffic violation punishable by a $60 fine.

Baker himself noted that he sometimes talks on the phone while driving, arguing that there are often legitimate reasons for doing so.  However, he said he never uses text messaging while in the car.

Texting while driving puts everyone on the road in danger.  If you or someone you know has been the victim of an automobile accident caused by such activity, it is important that you have expert legal representation.  Contact the Orlando personal injury lawyer Todd Miner by phone at 407-420-4040 for more information.
