Understanding Skull Fractures
Skull fractures refer to any break in the cranial bone. While there are
various types of skull fractures, there is usually only one cause: a forceful
impact to the head. These types of impacts can occur as the result of
car accidents, motorcycle accidents, truck accidents, falls, falling objects,
construction accidents, and other incidents in which there is enough force to break bone. While
skull fractures can sometimes be difficult to spot without a proper medical
evaluation, there are some signs and symptoms that may indicate a break
in the cranial bone, including:
- Swelling and tenderness
- Bruising of the face
- Bleeding from the nose or ears
Upon a medical evaluation, doctors can determine the type of skull fracture
that occurred, which will depend on the type of impact that was sustained
and where the impact occurred on the skull. Common types of skull fractures include:
Closed fracture – Also referred to as a simple fracture, closed fractures are characterized
by unbroken skin in the fracture area that has not been lacerated.
Open fracture – Also called compound fractures, these occur when skin is broken
and pieces of cranial bone are exposed.
Basal fracture – Basal fractures occur near the base of the skull and can affect
areas around the neck, spinal cord, eyes, and nose.
Depressed fracture – Depressed fractures involve a crushing of the skull with depression
of the cranial bone into the brain cavity.
Different types of fractures will range in severity and impact victims
differently, and may also include fractures in a straight line, incomplete
fractures, and comminuted fractures (where bone is broken into multiple
sections). Some fractures may be treated with conservative approaches
such as rest, pain management, and medications, while others may require
more invasive procedures such as neurosurgery.
Traumatic Brain Injuries
Traumatic brain injuries (TBI) occur when there is sudden blunt force trauma to the head, or when
sudden forces cause the head to rapidly accelerate and decelerate within
the skull. Because skull fractures occur as a result of a blow to the
head, they are often accompanied by traumatic brain injuries, though not
always. Just as with skull fractures, brain injuries can range in severity,
but they all have the potential to greatly impact the lives of victims,
sometimes in permanent and debilitating ways.
When handling cases involving fractures of the skull or blows to the head,
our legal team makes sure that clients are evaluated for the presence
of brain injuries, as they can have both short-term and long-term consequences
that require medical attention and treatment. When pursuing compensation,
our team also works to illustrate the nature of a brain injury and highlight
how they affect the lives of our clients.
